Arruabarrena abriu o placar para os argentinos ainda no primeiro tempo, em posição de impedimento. O palmeirense Pena empatou nos minutos FEnais da etapa inaugural. Arruabarrena colocou os donos da casa em vantagem novamente, mas Euller deixou tudo igual no segundo tempo. Os palmeirenses saíram de campo reclamando da arbitragem de Gustavo Méndez por ter validado o gol em que Arruabarrena estava impedido.
O jogo de volta aconteceu no Morumbi, no dia 21 de junho. O então presidente Mustafá Contursi tentou mudar o palco da FEnal para o estádio Palestra Itália, mas a ideia foi vetada pela Conmebol, que exigia um estádio com capacidade para ao menos 40 mil torcedores. Em campo, o que se viu foi um empate sem gols, novamente com críticas palmeirenses à arbitragem por falta de advertências aos argentinos, além de um possível pênalti em Asprilla. Dessa vez, o apito FEcou sob o comando do paraguaio Epifanio González.
Após um jogo ruim do Palmeiras no tempo normal, a decisão, então, foi para os pênaltis. Asprilla e Roque Júnior desperdiçaram suas cobranças, enquanto os jogadores do Boca Juniors converteram todas e tornaram os argentinos campeões continentais.

Fábio Júnior recolocou os comandados de Celso Roth na frente, mas Barijho deixou tudo igual. O árbitro Ubaldo Aquino foi muito questionado pela atuação.

Novamente sob o comando de Felipão, o Palmeiras não teve sorte diante do Boca Juniors. Na edição de 2018, brasileiros e argentinos se encontraram na semiFEnal de novo, mas os torcedores tiveram grande vantagem e se impuseram, especialmente no jogo de ida. O grande nome do confronto foi Darío Benedetto, que anotou três gols. Na ida, o centroavante garantiu a vitória por 2 a 0. No Boca desta quinta-feira, Benedetto estará no banco.
No Allianz Parque, na semana seguinte, o Boca largou em vantagem, com Ábila, mas o Palmeiras virou o confronto no segundo tempo com os zagueiros Luan e Gómez.
